VALROY GENE WATSON Obituary

Valroy Gene Watson was born on July 25, 1956, to Roy and Valda Watson in McKeesport, PA.
The first of four children, Val, also affectionately known as "Gene" by his loved ones, lived an
authentic and spiritual life fueled by his love of music and family.
Val was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Amarillo, TX. In his youth, he attended
Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA. During this time, he was a
musician for the Inspirational Choir and Instruments Vocals for Jesus Christ (IV for JC.) With
the strong foundation he built in church, he maintained his spiritual faith throughout his life.
Val received his education within the Compton Unified School District. Though he graduated
from Brethren Christian High School, his heart remained true to Dominguez High School.
In 1984, Valroy married Anita Coburn. From this union, he became a father to his two children,
Devan and Andrew. After spending a few years in Kansas City, MO, the family relocated to San
Diego, CA, in 2004, where Val found his forever home.
Throughout his life, Val was soft-spoken, firm in his beliefs, and a very loving and supportive
father. His greatest passion was being a dad. He was always eager to help and support those in
need, and for that, he was adored by so many. He loved to cook and took great pride in grilling
and smoking meat to host family and friends.
Val was also artistic and talented--playing keyboards, guitar, saxophone, drums, and more. He
also loved to sing, write, and produce his own music. He was often inspired by time spent
walking on the beach and allowed his experiences to influence his music. In addition to his own
musical endeavors, he frequently collaborated with other musical artists. Music was his life.
Valroy departed this life on Sunday, October 30, 2022. He is preceded in death by his mother,
Valda Watson. He leaves many to cherish his memory, including his devoted and loving
children, Devan N. Watson and Andrew E. Watson, father Roy G. Watson, siblings Darcy R.
Watson, Angel A. Watson, Steven N. Watson, and honorary sister, Linda Farmer-Francis. He
also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends considered "Family."
Valroy Gene Watson will be remembered for his unconditional love, kindness, creativity, and
generosity. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
