SAMMIE REE JAMES Obituary

REMEMBERING SAMMIE

Sammie Ree James was born to Nellie Mae James and Thad James on December 23, 1947, in Columbia, Mississippi. He departed this earthly life on Sunday, October 19, 2025. He was predeceased by his parents Nellie Mae James and Thad James; Four brothers: Bobby Rucker, Willie Fortenberry, Robert Fortenberry, Lawrence "Thad" James; Five sisters Jean Lundy, Betty Jean James, Thaddie Bell James, Carolyn Pittman, Ursula James.

Sammie leaves to celebrate his life his wife of 54 years: Lucinda James; Two children: Roshawnda James and Samuel James; Four grandchildren: Markell Prince, Ashanti Prince, Taneya Prince, and Tennyson James; One brother: Romal James (Jackie).

Sammie's remarkable life was defined by love, laughter, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was their rock, their protector, and their strongest supporter. He also served in the United States Army and was a proud Vietnam Veteran.

A dedicated provider, Sammie worked for five decades in construction as the owner of S & J Masonry taking pride in the homes, buildings, bridges, and roads he built that will stand long after him. With calloused hands and a steadfast work ethic, he showed his family that greatness is achieved not through recognition, but through perseverance and a job well done.

Sammie had a gift for "unbelievable" storytelling. He was able to captivate a room with humor and his big infectious smile. Though he has departed this world, the legacy he built-in love, in family, in service, and in spirit-will endure for generations. His stories will continue to be told, and his laughter will continue to be heard in the echoes of every family gathering.

CLOSE YOUR EYES BLACK MAN

Close your eyes black man,

don't be afraid to sleep; you have done too much.

Close your eyes black man, don't be afraid

There's people watching you as you sleep. When you wake, lift your glasses from your eyes. You don't need them to see.

Like the Man says, you have your internal mind; soul, and heart to let you see.

So close your eyes black man, and drift off of to sleep.

When you wake you can finish your task. I know it's not you to leave a task undone. But you have done too much work. It's now out of your power.

You are tired, so close your eyes black man, and let your heart rest as you sleep.
