Rogers Cleon Waiters was born November 9 th 1945 in Dallas, Texas, to S.W. and Jessie
Dean Waiters. Rogers attended Hamilton Park High where he played the trumpet in the
band. After graduation, he attended Texas Tech University where he was one of the first
blacks to play in the band.
In 1966, he left Texas Tech University, to join the United States Navy where he served
his country for over 30 years until his retirement as a Senior Chief. He was also was
employed by the United States Postal Service for 15 years until his retirement.
Rogers love for God, guided him to unite with Hamilton Park Methodist Church in June
1958, where he served on the youth usher board. He continued attending various
churches in San Diego, California.
Among some of the various organizations, Rogers was a member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 5179; a member of the Most Worshipful Sons of Light Masonic
Lodge, where he obtained the 33 rd degree; and a member of the American Legion Post
310.
Rogers had many hobbies. He enjoyed his amateur radio (N6BPA), his westerns,
various political CNN shows and golfing. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboy fan. He
would always say, “How ‘bout dem Cowboys?’’ Overall, Rogers was a compassionate
and loving man and he derived great pleasure in helping others.
On Tuesday morning, November 26 th , 2024, Rogers was called to rest. Rogers was
proceeded in death by his father S.W. Waiters; his mother Jessie Dean Waiters; his
brother S.W. Waiters Jr., his sister Jackye W. Lee and his son Rogers Cleon Waiters Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife Kathy McCray-Waiters of San
Diego, California; his daughter Latisha Renee Jones and Granddaughter Jersey Jones
of Maryland; Step-children James McCray Jr, Coretta Samuels and Brittney McCray all
of San Diego, California; his brother Michael Waiters of Dallas, Texas; sister Denise
Mitchell and niece Jessica Mitchell all of Dallas, Texas and a number of supportive
relatives and friends.
