PEYTON NURSE Obituary

Peyton Pablo-Manning Nurse was born on March 25, 2001 at the Naval Medical Center San
Diego to then CDR Nigel A. Nurse and LTJG Lesley A. Nurse, Medical Corps. He was the oldest of
2 children. His younger sister, Lindsey Alexis Nurse, is currently a junior at Occidental College.
They were very close to each other as they were only 17 months apart.
Peyton completed elementary school at Mt. Helix Academy of La Mesa, CA and then attended
7 th and 8 th grades College Preparatory Middle school in La Mesa, CA. Peyton graduated from
Helix Charter High school with honors in June 2019. Upon graduation, Peyton was accepted and
enrolled in California State University, Northridge. There he completed 3 years as a computer
science major, with a focus in cybersecurity.
Peyton went to college with not only a desire to learn and earn a degree toward a future
career, but also to grow into a well-developed, well-connected young man. It was a long-
standing goal of his to pledge and become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He
knew a little about the fraternity from his grandfather, Pastor Richard E. Reese (whom Peyton
looked just like!), and was excited and honored to become a “legacy” member in the very same
Upsilon chapter his grandfather belonged to. But there were 2 main reasons he joined: He
wanted to be part of a brotherhood, where he was 100% accepted and loved outside of the
love he got at home. And secondly, he wanted to make his family proud, to be respected and
admired, which he most definitely was. Peyton gave his all to the process and he finally crossed
as the #3 Tail Rokk on April1, 2022, with his 2 line brothers, Mewael F. Habtai and Joshua E.
Hudson, His #1 and #2. During his short time with the Kappas, Peyton was active in the
community and definitely enjoyed the brotherhood, even introducing many of his new brothers
to his mother and sister Lindsey as “new sons and brothers”.
Peyton had several odd jobs, from delivering pizza and Door Dash, to tutoring preschool
children. However, his servant’s heart burned to volunteer and work in the community to help
those who were less fortunate. He worked closely with founder and CEO Mr. Monte A. Jones, of
the Logan Heights Community Development Corp. (CDC) for 10 years. We worked on a number
of projects: assisting with the Future Achievers preschool, community beatification projects,
annual street fair, annual toy drive, community garden restoration, to name a few.
Peyton had 2 intensive summer internships with the Black Contractors Association (BCA) of San
Diego, working directly under Mr. Abdur-Rahim Hameed, Founder and Executive President of
the BCA of San Diego. Peyton assisted Mr. Hameed and his team in the building and repair of
many homes and structures in the South east San Diego community, as well as networking and
lobbying for funding and organizational opportunities. Peyton then used his skill and passion for
both the BCA and the Logan Heights CDC for his senior project for Helix Charter High School. He
built a sandbox for the Future Achievers Preschool under the guidance of Mr. Hameed and Mr.
Monte Jones. “This was one of the happiest times in Peyton’s life. He had such a sense of
contribution and accomplishment. Plus, he was doing the work of Jesus—carpentry”, Dr. Lesley
A. Nurse, his mother.
Loving others is what Peyton did best. Not only did he help the communities around him, but
Peyton became close and intimate with others. Despite the struggles and difficulties he

endured, Peyton not only maintained a smile and kind word for others, but he was always the
first one to offer help in someone’s time of need, giving hope and even giving his last dollar to
those who needed it. Peyton even took in Panther, a dog who had no other home, saving him
from the pound and possible death. Peyton and Panther became a team, a duo, rescuing each
other.
Peyton was able to go on a mission trip in 2019 to Cuba, and was changed forever from that
experience. There he played with and taught children about God, and listened to the stories of
the families. God even used him as a vessel of prayer, laying hands on a couple, praying in
fluent Spanish, obviously filled with the Holy Spirit!
At the age of 17, Peyton decided he wanted to be an organ donor. He said, “I want to be like
you Mom…saving lives.” That is exactly what Peyton has done. When he was unable to recover
from his injury, he has given hope of new life by donating his heart, lungs, kidneys, and tissue.
Peyton accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and is a child of God. He loves because he knew
God’s complete and perfect love for him, and Peyton learned to love others like Jesus. In just 21
years, Peyton completed the plan and purpose God had for his life.
Peyton was preceded in death by his 2 grandfathers, Pastor Richard E. Reese (maternal) and
Michael Nurse (paternal). He is survived by his father CAPT (ret) Nigel A. Nurse; mother Dr.
Lesley A. Nurse; and his sister Lindsey A. Nurse; step-mother Jessica Nurse; step-sister Madison
Emery and step brother Austin Emery; grandmothers Jacquelyne L. Reese (maternal) and Cyrilla
Nurse (paternal); and godmother Dr. Gwendolyn Yates. He has 2 surviving paternal aunts, Jonel
Nurse-Cupidore (Cornel) and Kathy Ann Neyra (Aldo), and 3 paternal uncles, Joel Nurse (Alicia),
Michael Nurse Jr. (Suzette) and Marlon Nurse, and 5 remaining great-aunts and a great-uncle.
His surviving 1st cousins are: Kristen Haney, Aaron Nurse (Melissa), Justin Nurse, and Jolyssa
Nurse. He has many extended cousins, family members, a Kappa brotherhood and countless
numbers of friends that he touched so deeply and can’t wait to see him again!
