Marceline Leola Long was the oldest of four children born to Ernest and Alma Marshall on May 10, 1928 in Los Angeles, California. Before sunrise on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Marceline was called home to be with the Lord and received her wings.

Marceline obtained her formal education at Stockton Elementary, Memorial Junior High School, and went onto graduate from San Diego High School in 1946. Marceline was a beautiful young woman who could play basketball with the best of them and was asked to be team captain of her High School girls' Basketball Team.

Marceline would often share that growing up, she never had a baby doll; because of this, as a young child she took up sewing as a young girl under the loving guidance of her mother. She developed a passion to sew and spent countless hours designing and creating amazing garments for themselves and her siblings. Marceline's skills blossomed in this field, enabling her to construct garments from photographs and magazines, as well as create her own After-5 formal wear. She became an exceptional seamstress; if you could think it, she could make it. She was later accepted into Frank Wiggins Trade School, in the Fashion Design Program in Los Angeles, CA. now known as Los Angeles Trade Tech. This skillful talent landed her a job as a dressmaker with family friend, Ruby Washington. This exposure opened doors to a clothier position at Martike Leather Products in downtown San Diego. Her skills were in high demand by many clients, friends and family.

Not only was Marceline blessed with a natural skill to design garments but was also blessed with a beautiful voice. She did backup vocals for Slim Gaillard at a popular club on Pacific Coast Highway. Her voice even captured the attention of Duke Ellington who had wanted her to become a back-up singer, but due to her age and a protective father her career was short lived.

Marceline met Merle W. Porter, Sr. and after a long courtship were joined in holy matrimony. They were blessed with four sons, Michael, Myron, Merle and Marshall Porter. She later met and married James W. Long and was again blessed with yet another baby boy, Morgan Long. She had also taken the role as second Mom to nephews Ernest Bryson, Tony Marshall, and Ezekiel Evans and sons Calvert J. Porter and Kevin Porter nurturing them all.

Because of her grandmother, Leola K. Williams affectionately known as Mom Ollie who was an ordained Minister, Marceline was no stranger to bible studies, attending services and revivals. In her later years she became a member of Christian Life Center of San Diego under the prayerful watch of Bishop Blair Holloway. She loved the Lord. This was evident by her sweet spirit and the way she expressed her appreciation for every act of kindness towards her.

Marceline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Marceline was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Alma Marshall, husbands, Merle W. Porter, Sr. and James W. Long, siblings Ernestine Marshall, Donald Marshall, sons Calvert J. Porter, Michael W. Porter and nephew, Ezekiel Marshall.

She leaves to cherish her memory sons Myron D. Uocelyn) Porter, Merle W. Jr. (Helen) Porter, Marshall J.O. Porter, Morgan J. Long and Kevin J. (Bridget) Porter all of San Diego, California. She leaves one brother, Douglas 0. Marshall, one cousin, Gloria (aka-Gummer) Davis, 5 nephews, 1 niece, 11 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, family members and friends.
