Mary D. Bush was born in Chicago Illinois, on January 29, 1939. She was the only child of
Howard and Maggie Johnson. Mary was a member of Greater Trinity Baptist Church over 60
years, and very active in other community organizations where she flourished in her passion
to serve others.
Throughout Mary’s 38-year career with the City of San Diego, she demonstrated a strong
commitment to excellence. Mary held memberships in the American Payroll Association,
San Diego Governmental Finance Officers Association, California Women in Government,
Municipal Employees Association (MEA), among other professional organizations. On
June 9, 2003, the Council of the City of San Diego, and on behalf of the people of San
Diego, proclaimed the day to be "MARY D. BUSH DAY" in the City of San Diego.
Mary was so much to so many — a devoted mother, a loyal friend, a loving grandmother and
great grandmother, and a radiant soul who brought warmth, laughter, and love wherever she
went. Her kindness, strength, and unwavering spirit left an imprint on all of us, and her
absence leaves a void that can never be filled. She touched countless lives with her generous
heart and gentle wisdom. Whether through a simple smile, a thoughtful prayer, or her endless
support, Mary made this world a better place.
"If I can help somebody as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song,
If I can show somebody that they are travelling wrong,
Then my living shall not be in vain."
