Mr. Louis Welles Messervy, fondly known by family, as Lou, passed away on August 19, 2025, in Pacific Beach, California, at the age of 55.
Lou was born on November 20, 1969, in New London, Connecticut, as the sixth child of nine to the late Lawrence Welling Messervy, Jr. (1931–2020) and Virginia Ann Stringfield (1937–2022).
Louis grew up in the town of Salem, Connecticut, where he attended Salem School through the 8th grade. In this environment he formed strong bonds with his family and town-folk, as well as his peers from church and school. Louis enjoyed many hobbies as a youth, with some of his favorites being sports, trailblazing paths through the local forests on his Honda SL 70 motorcycle, and hunting pheasants with Benjamin, his loyal Collie canine companion. These formative years in the town of Salem saw Louis grow into a fine young man who loved and respected others and as someone who would literally “give you the shirt off his back.” Some of the proudest moments of his youth included being baptized and becoming a priest in his church, winning the Salem elementary school outstanding male athlete of the year while he was in 8th grade, and besting his peers in BB gun wars in the forests of Salem.
Louis spent his high school years in Marlton, New Jersey, where he attended Cherokee High School. During this time, Louis enjoyed leisurely pursuits such as modifying his Nissan 280ZX Turbo, fishing, basketball, weight lifting and tennis. Basketball was his main focus in his time at Cherokee, as this was his favorite sport. He was talented and dedicated enough to get some spot time on the varsity basketball team as a freshman, and made the varsity team from his sophomore campaign and on. Louis was a natural leader and thus ended up playing point guard, where he could best help put his squad in positions to be successful. One of his favorite varsity basketball moments on the home court of Cherokee was in making a game winning shot with no time on the clock against an arch rival school. He was subsequently mobbed by his peers and fans as they stormed the court in celebration.
In his early twenties, Louis proudly served in the National Guard, an experience that shaped him for life. His service instilled in him discipline, ambition, confidence, and a steadfast love of country. Lou was a deep hearted patriot that loved America!
Lou moved out west in his mid twenties and made San Diego his home, where he built both an amazing life and legacy. In 2002, he founded Brushworks Painting, a business that quickly earned a reputation for quality and integrity. Through his work, he became well known and well liked by fellow business owners and the broader community.
Louis met Maggie Ambrose in 1996 and together they welcomed their son, Jake Lawrence Messervy in 2006. Lou’s greatest pride and joy was being a father. He dedicated himself to giving Jake a full and meaningful life, working tirelessly to provide for him while also sharing his love of God, the ocean, and sports.
An avid surfer, Lou spent as much time as he could in the waves of Pacific Beach with his son Jake. The surf, the sun, and the friendships he built there were a vital part of his life. His easygoing nature, strong work ethic, and big heart left an impression on everyone who knew him.
Lou’s legacy lives on through his beloved son, Jake, and through the many lives he touched as a father, brother, friend, business owner, and member of the Pacific Beach community.
Louis is survived by his Spouse, Maggie Ambrose and their son Jake Lawrence Messervy.
Louis is survived by his siblings and their spouses. Lawrence Welling Messervy III and his wife Teresa Messervy, Lyle Wade Messervy and his wife Christina Messervy, Tracy Renee Messervy and her wife Marlene Ewankow, Lee Warren Messervy and his wife Lori Messervy, Angela Suzette Jones and her husband Timothy Jones, Lucas Whitney Messervy, Jennifer Paige Messervy, Lance Ward Messervy and his wife Amanda Messervy and many nieces and nephews.
