JOHN INGE Obituary

GUNNERY SERGEANT J T INGE was born on April 15, 1929 in Danville, Virginia.  He expired on October 24, 2020.

He entered the Marine Corps on July 11, 1946 and underwent basic training at the segregated Marine Corps training facility called Camp Montford Point. After completion of basic training, he was assigned to the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) Supply. His initial assignment after basic training was to the Interior Guard Duty on Saipan from 1946 to 1947. In 1947 he was reassigned to Guam where he served in his basic supply MOS.

After completion of his tour on Guam in 1948 and being prompted to Corporal, he returned to Camp Montford Point where he was again assigned to the Interior Guard until his transfer to the Main Camp Lejeune during the start of the FULL INTEGRATION of African Americans into the Marine Corps. While there, he continued in the Interior Guard until he began his work in his assigned MOS at Hadnot Point. There, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In 1953 he was transferred to the Republic of Korea servicing in his supply MOS and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his time deployed, he also served in Fuji and Yokosuka, Japan until 1956. Between 1956 and 1964 he served stateside duties in San Francisco, Barstow and Twenty-Nine Palms, California working in his primary MOS.

In 1964 he received orders to report to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego (MCRD), CA. After completion of Drill Instructor School, he was assigned to Charlie Company where he served as a Drill Instructor then later Platoon Sergeant for recruit platoons. At the completion of his tour in 1967 and after being promoted to Gunnery Sergeant, he reported to Vietnam where he was attached to the Bridge Company of the 7th Engineers Company in Da Nang from 1967 to 1968 where his duties included Bridge Construction.

In 1968, he was again assigned to MCRD, CA. where he served as a Series Gunnery Sergeant until his retirement. In 1969, Gunnery Sergeant Inge retired from the United States Marine Corps after serving twenty-three years of honorable and faithful service to the United States of America with Love to the Corps and Country. His military awards include: Combat Action Ribbon, American Victory, Republic of Korea and Vietnam ribbons.

After retirement, he assumed a position with the US Postal Service from 1969 to 1990. From 1990 to 1992 he worked for Continental Airlines until his final retirement.

During 1969 to 1975 he continued his education by attending classes at both City College and San Diego State University.

He was married to the former Mae Session (Deceased) of San Francisco, CA for forty years. He was Father to four children: Pamela, Asma, Valerie & Giani. He also leaves behind, his sisters, Hallie Martin, and Kaye Chandler; his brother-in-law, Augustus Magee; nieces, nephews, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He has been a faithful member of the Good Shepard Missionary Baptist Church since 1975, currently under the direction of Dr. Gregory Morgan.

J T Inge lived in San Diego, CA and was an active life member of Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. San Diego Chapter #12, the VFW, American Legion and the Elk Lodge. In June of 2012, Gunnery Sergeant J T Inge was awarded the Congressional Gold Metal.
