Joan Etta Player Johnson, fondly known as "Auntie Sugar", entered this world on December 5th, 1952, at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, born to Walter Johnson Jr. and Mary Louise Johnson. She was the second of two children at the time of her birth, with an older brother, Ronald Johnson. Joan's family later expanded when her mother married Fred "Tiz" Morrison, welcoming three more siblings: Fred Morrison Jr., Freddie Lynn Morrison, and Melissa (Lisa) Morrison.
After graduating from Crawford High School, Joan pursued her passion for literature at San Diego State University, earning a bachelor's degree in English Literature. In 1975, she exchanged vows with Vic (Coach) Player Jr., and their union welcomed a son, Victor-John Player, in July of 1976. Joan's radiant personality illuminated every room she entered. She treasured family time, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need, day or night, ensuring they had all they required for a speedy recovery, whether it be cooking, washing, cleaning, or offering her compassionate presence.
Utilizing her education and innate compassion, Joan dedicated many years to working with the mentally challenged at ARC San Diego. Her family held the utmost priority in her life, reciprocating their love and affection abundantly. She is survived by her son Victor-John Player, daughter-in-law Jennifer Ann Player, and her beloved grandson Isaac. She was also cherished by her loving uncle and aunt, Floyd and Sandra Robinson, first cousin Rhonda "Aniki" Okoye, along with her older brother Ron 'Ronnie" Johnson, with whom she had a bond that will never be broken, sisters Freddie Lynn and Melissa Morrison.
In addition to her immediate family, Joan leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews. who were showered with her boundless affection, along with lifelong dear friends Debra Mosby and Glenda George-Patterson, among many others. She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Walter Johnson Jr. and Mary Louise Johnson-Morrison, stepfather Fred “Tiz” Morrison Sr., and younger brother Fred Morrison Jr. Joan's memory will forever be treasured by all who were touched by her kindness, warmth, and unwavering love.
