EMMETT ALEXANDER SAVAGE Obituary

Emmett Savage Jr. was born December 19, 1935 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Emmett Savage
Sr. and Annie Meeks-Savage. Emmett, lovingly known as Junior to many family and friends was
his parent’s joy. Interestingly, he held the title of first in many ways, especially on his maternal
side. Junior, the 1st son to thrive in a family where his mother was the first daughter, he was the
1st grandson to John Henry and Pearl Meeks and the 1st, first-cousin to over 30 cousins. Junior
came from a family of 13 children in total, nine of whom flourished into adulthood. He was
baptized into Christ at an early age and went to church with the family.
Junior attended Gibson Elementary School, Clover Valley School and Bowman High School. An
astute student, he left Mississippi at the tender age of 15 and moved to San Diego, California.
Again another first, leading the way as four brothers joined him in moving to the Golden State.
Junior trained as a machinist upon leaving school. He had an excellent eye for detail and even
re-created a small cannon resembling the ones he grew up seeing at the Vicksburg National
Military Park. Junior served his country and was in the United States Army Reserves. He was a
very good baseball player and scouts wanted to look at him for the pros. However, on a visit to
Vicksburg, the scouts missed him and were unable to see him play. But life had something else
in store for Junior. He became a businessman, had a Board & Care and owned several
properties. Junior was also employed by the Environmental Services Department – City of San
Diego up until his retirement.
While in San Diego, Junior met the lovely Julia “Marie” Davis to whom they share a son, Donald
Glen Davis. Glen has always been the apple of his Dad’s eye, his pride and joy whom he loved
dearly. Later on Junior met his life mate, Mattie Davis, to which he was blessed with a devoted
stepdaughter, Patricia “Pie” Anderson, whom he loved and held dear to his heart. During his 71
years in San Diego he also created an endearing network of friends who became “family” where
he was affectionately known as Savage.
Junior kept a calm, cool and friendly personality. His baritone laugh was infectious and made all
around him smile. Reading a variety of books and magazines was one of Junior’s favorite
pastimes. He stayed abreast of all worldly and current events, which included the latest trends.
He loved to go to Tijuana, Mexico to bet on horse races, shopping with the Home Shopping
Channel, and wearing jeans and long sleeve shirts with at least one breast pocket to hold his
pens. Junior‘s palate was vast as he enjoyed food from all cultures including Vietnamese and
German. But his favorite meal was a steak dinner. And he loved to put hot sauce on everything!
But most of all Junior loved his family. His brothers recount how he taught them how to box, the
ins and outs of sports cars, and how he had a funny bone and even played pranks on his
younger siblings upon his visits to Vicksburg. He thoroughly enjoyed their visits to his home as
well. Junior told them all, they were always welcomed, day or night.
On October 30, 2022 Junior transitioned to be with the Lord. He is welcomed into Heaven by his
parents, siblings; Robert, Earl, Joseph and Marie (all transitioned as infants), sisters; Pearl “Pet”
Gaines of Buffalo, Lois Ann Nixon of Nashville, Eugenia “Jean” Richardson of Boston, brothers;
John “Bubba” Savage of San Francisco and Dr. Richard “Chick“ Savage, PhD of Boston.
He leaves to cherish his memory, son Glen (Janet) and daughter Patricia, grandchildren
Preston Davis, Jenell Anderson and Donald Harrison IIII. His devoted brothers, Lester E Savage
Sr. (San Francisco), Drs. Arnold R. Savage (Veassa) (Los Angeles) and Arthur D. Savage (Los
Angeles), brother-in-law, Dr. John Nixon (Nashville), sister-in laws; Sondra Savage (San
Francisco) and Juana “Gina” Savage (Boston), and a host of nieces and nephews to whom he
was a wonderful uncle to, and many loving cousins and friends.
Junior was well loved and will be truly missed.
