DOROTHY MAE FULTER Obituary

“I was born on an island that no longer exists,” Dorothy said in one of her first writings
when she was taking classes at Southwestern several years ago. Dorothy Mae Fulter
was born on Jefferson Island, Louisiana, on March 17, 1944, to the late Mr. and Mrs.
James and Caldonia Moncriffe. She was baptized at an early age in the lake that ran
behind their home under the pastorage of Rev Syrie of the Jefferson Island Baptist
Church.
Dorothy attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse, which is now part of a
museum, on Jefferson Island before moving to New Iberia. She attended Iberia Parish
Training School and graduated from Henderson High School in New Ibera, LA.
Dot married Samuel Fulter on December 25, 1964. They traveled and lived in different
places during his military service. While in New Orleans, Dot attended and graduated
from cosmetology school in New Orleans in 1966 (the reason her hair was always
perfect). Dot and Sam finally settled in San Diego in 1974 to raise their family.
Dot and Sam were blessed with three children: Thad, Eric, and Stacey. While being a
loving and caring parent and a fantastic cook, Dorothy loved to read, and in her later
years, she became an avid puzzle player. She enjoyed playing with Chumpchange, the
family dog. Dot and Sam were founding members of the Louisiana Social and Charity
Association, which brought together native Louisianans to celebrate their heritage and
provide scholarships to deserving students. They annually attended Mardi Gras in New
Orleans and had annual extravaganzas here in San Diego.
She retired around 1995 from working as an Assistant Buyer for the Navy Exchange
Service Center after receiving multiple commendations as Employee of the Month and

Year. Her next, biggest, and most rewarding job was being The Best Nana in the World
to grandson Shane. She took him to daily practices, attended games, and was his all-
around biggest supporter and sideline cheerleader!
Dorothy was preceded in death by her sons, Thad and Eric and husband Samuel Fulter.
Dorothy is survived by her grandson Shane, the absolute light of her life, as well as her
daughter Stacey, sisters Vivian Davis and Geraldine Jackson, Aunt Lois Brown, as well
as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
