DOROTHY PETWAY Obituary

Dorothy was born in Clarksville, Virginia, the third of nine children born to Grace and Clem
Jones. Her parents moved the family to Orange, New Jersey then south to the small town of
Newfield, New Jersey when she was an infant.
She attended Malaga, Franklinville, and Clayton elementary schools. Dorothy continued her
education including some college courses here in San Diego.
Dorothy came to work in San Diego at the Convair Aircraft Plant, as part of the war effort.  At
the end of the war, she returned home to Newfield, New Jersey. In 1947 Dorothy married
Matthew Petway.  After his death, she and her young daughter Victoria moved to San Diego,
where she worked at the North Island Naval Station. She retired from there in 1982.
She joined Mt. Zion Baptist church, in San Diego under Rev Johnson and Rev Linzie Whitmill
where she was a long-time member.  She attended Sunday School, Mission Circle, as well as
other auxiliaries within the church. She was an active member of the American Legion Dennis T.
Williams Post Auxiliary 310, the 8 and 40 Salon 141, and the Southcrest Recreation Council.  For
her 60 plus years as a volunteer in the city of San Diego, the city named a park in her honor.
"The Dorothy Petway Neighborhood Park" is located at 36th and Regal, in the Community of
Southcrest. Other community organizations she belonged to were the Metro AARP,
Neighborhood House Senior Center and the Friends of the Malcolm X Library.
Her hobbies were traveling and sewing. She purchased a motor home and named it the “Midas
Kid”. Traveling with family and friends she made several road trips across the country.
She traveled the world by land and sea visiting Europe several times. Her fondest memory was
her trip to the Holy Land.
She was pre-deceased by her two sisters and five of her brothers.  She leaves to cherish her
memories two children, Victoria and Raymond, a grandson, Matthew Kirkpatrick of Phoenix,
Arizona, one remaining brother, Robert Jones of New Jersey, and a host of nieces, nephews’
cousins, relatives and friends.

May the work I’ve done speak for me.
When I’m resting home in glory,
there is nothing to be said;
May the works that I’ve done,
Speak for me......
