DELORES QUINN Obituary

On August 2, 1946, identical twins Delores and Annie Delores were born to Dorothy Lee and Moses Burgain Quinn in San Diego, CA. Due to complications, Annie Delores passed away after three months, and the doctors expected that Delores wouldn’t survive past the age of five. She proved them wrong by living way past that age. When her health and mobility began  to decline, Delores would say, “I am okay with whatever the Lord has deemed for my life. I’ve lived seventy years more than the doctors said I would live after birth.”

Delores attended Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School, Memorial Junior High School, and in 1965 she graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. Following high school. Delores went to Charleston Job Corps Center in Charleston, WV. After graduating from Job Corps. Delores returned to San Diego and worked at Long’s Tax Office as a bookkeeper and tax assistant.

In 1968, she accepted a position at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) where she worked in the Supply Warehouse, Cash Office, and the Audit Department. Delores retired after 44 years of dedicated federal service.

After riding the bus to work for a year, Delores purchased, and became the first person in San Diego with a Ford Mustang Mach 1. It was white with body-colored bumpers and red striping on the sides and front hood, with red leather interior. She loved driving her car and riding around San Diego with her Brother & Sister.

Following in her Father’s footsteps. Delores became a member of the Order of Eastern Star,  throughout her 49 years of duty. Delores was appointed to several positions, including; illustrious Commander, Secretary, Inside Spy and Treasurer. Delores was also a member of the Imperial Court, Daughters of Isis, a charitable and benevolent organization. For both organizations, she insisted that business was conducted properly and was known to quote from the handbook immediatley, if procedures were not being followed.

Delores was known as a “numbers girl.” She never left a restaurant, drive thru window, or checkout counter without recording the transaction into a checkbook register. If you were a customer waiting for the table, in line at the drive thru, or at the checkout counter, you had to wait until she entered and calculated the balance. So, if you were with her, it was embarrassing but, that was Delores Quinn, the bookkeeper. Always friendly, caring, and warm: she genuinely loved spending time with people. Although appearing shy at times, could quickly break out of that cocoon and transform into a lovely social butterfly. If she met you, you were her friend.

Delores loved the Lord and accepted Him as her personal savior early in life at the Family church, Logan Temple AME Zion and later moved on to Calvary Baptist Church where she was baptized by the late, great Dr. S.M. Lockridge in 1966. Delores eventually moved her membership to New Paradise Baptist Church in June of 2021; a place she called her "forever church home". She loved the church family and especially Pastor James Moore, Jr. and his preaching. She once said “You know, I thought I knew Gods Word good, but Pastor Moore breaks down the Bible and girl, he is on point!” She loved attending Bible Study and being a member of the Willing Workers committee.

Delores loved to read novels and history books, but her favorite book of all time, had to be, the Bible. Her greatest gift was her discipleship and knowing the Word of God.  Many friends and family came to know Jesus through her witness. She enjoyed traveling and listening to music: her favorite genres being Gospel & R&B/soul. Ms. Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, was her favorite artist. Her favorite songs were: “Amazing Grace” and “Respect”.

She was extremely proud of her family and their accomplishments. Often marveling at her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom knew and loved her dearly. She enjoyed spending time with all her family and friends.Delores often said, that as a child she shared a special bond with Grandmother, Beulah Gaynelle Earl, whom everyone affectionally called “Big Mama”.

On July 28, 2022. Delores Quinn was fully healed and entered eternity. She was preceded in death by her twin sister Annie Delores: Grandmother Beulah G. Earl: parents, Dorothy and Moses B.
