Audrey Lee Hill was born on July 14, 1929, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was the only child of Naomi Taylor Hill and Vernon Hill.

Audrey spent her childhood years in San Marcos, Texas and attended Catholic school. She and Naomi moved to San Francisco, California where Naomi met and married Melvin Freeman in 1942, and the family relocated to San Diego, California.

On June 26, 1949, Audrey married Sam Allen Burris in San Diego. They shared a fun, happy, loving, respectful, and devoted union until his death on October 21, 1987. They had no children; however, they had a fun-loving bond with their younger relatives who always enjoyed being around Audrey and Allen.

Audrey was employed at the U.S. Department of Defense Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWARS) in San Diego for many years until her retirement. She was very proud of the service she provided to our warfighters.

Audrey had a deep and abiding faith in God. She always prayed for others and expressed profound gratitude for her many blessings. She was dedicated and loyal member of Christ United Presbyterian Church of San Diego for 64 years and served on the Deacon Board and as member of the Presbyterian Women organization. She loved attending church services, which was the highlight of her week. Through the years, her church family was a dedicated and loving source of support and strength her. Church members visited her regularly, provided transportation to church services and various events, brought her meals, and cared for her as her health began to decline. Her church family would often just show up at her home and later at her assisted living facility to visit and cheer her up, most often with her favorite foods in town. They knew and anticipated her needs and provided help and assistance without being asked to do so.

Audrey was a beautiful and kinds spirit who had a great sense of humor, was fun to be around, sweet, and loving. She was always smiling, complementing others, and continually expressing gratitude for the kindness she received. Her lovely terms of endearment for others like “sweetcakes” always brought smiles. She loved dressing up and going to church and then to brunch with the YaYa Sisters, her special and fun-loving social group. She had a phenomenal memory and had no difficulty remembering names, phone numbers, events, or her medical information.

Audrey loved sports, especially watching college football on TV. Her favorite team was Notre Dame. She was very excited and delighted when the Los Angeles Rams won the 2022 Super Bowl. She enjoyed bowling, traveling, especially with her YaYa Sisters, and simply socializing with friends. Her favorite foods included jello, ice cream, codfish, chicken breast from KFC, pancakes from IHOP, and Hershey Chocolate Kisses. Fortunately, her friends made certain that she always had her favorite foods to enjoy.

Audrey and Naomi had a special affection for animals, especially cats. Her home was a haven for many furry friends, especially he beloved cat, Beasley and dog, Prince.

In Spite of health concerns Audrey faced in her later years, she refused to be a prisoner of those challenges. She insisted on going to church, getting her hair done, going to the bank, paying her bills and always going to lunch or brunch. Her faith that God would take care of her gave her strength and courage and her dogged determination to be as independent as possible.
