ANGELITE ARMENTO-McWHORTER

Angelite Armento-McWhorter was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, classmate, soror, coworker, and so much more. She passed away June 29, 2021 at her home in San Diego, California. She was born November 17, 1969 in Chicago, but her parents Sophia “Linda” Durden and Joseph Angelo Armento, relocated to Atlanta before her second birthday. There she grew to be a remarkable child–fearless and outgoing. She was known as much for her boundless energy and enthusiasm as the long ponytails that flew in her wake as she rode her bike. As was her way, she forged friendships in grade school and college that would endure her entire life. Angelite attended Oglethorpe Elementary in southwest Atlanta and Lakeshore High School in College Park. Despite her many extracurricular activities, she always had time to nurture her younger brother, Robert Jr. Always ahead of her time, she worked as an editor of the Purple Cow, a teen newsletter, a precursor to blog culture. She also worked as a page for Georgia State Senator Julian Bond. After high school, she enrolled at Spelman College, a historically Black college for women. There, Angelite blossomed into the vivacious, capable, and generous woman everyone remembers. Like a butterfly fluttering from flower to flower, she enjoyed diverse social circles and affinity groups. She was a math major and a cheerleader. In Spring of 1989, she was inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority – the third generation in her family to earn her pearls. In 1998, she married Kevin McWhorter, the love of her life. Seven years later, in 2004, they welcomed beautiful twins Rheily Jackson and Remi Mason. After a series of fulfilling career moves across the country the family settled in San Diego where they became very true Californians, fully embracing the lifestyle and community. Angelite and Kevin saw to it that their children were exposed to a world brimming with Jack & Jill, international travel, and other educational experiences; but they also enjoyed the simple pleasures like dinner together at the kitchen table. Angelite and Kevin were major music lovers and full of wanderlust, often traveling to Montreal and Amsterdam to music festivals with friends during the summer months. Her joy in all things aesthetically pleasing, was apparent in the photographs she captured, documenting her incredible journey. Amazing museums, riveting architecture, and unusual lighting enhanced the pleasure of good food, good sips, and good friends. A working mom, Angelite held an MBA degree from the University of Maryland, but she was never a buttoned-down executive. Angelite brought her personal flair to her professional life, making her a standout achiever in every work environment. From Aetna Insurance Company to FRITO Lay, to the Limited Companies to Wal-Mart, she made her mark across the country. In her final endeavors, she found the perfect fit between her business acumen, signature style, and generous spirit. As a stylist for Stella and Dot, she sold jewelry and accessories to friends, family, and anyone else whose personal presentation could use a little upgrade. She also thrived as a Redfin real-estate agent. Her kindness made for instant rapport between herself and those searching for a home. She crunched numbers, not the clients. She was a person you could trust, even strangers sensed this immediately. Her sales numbers in both fields earned her special recognition, but the real proof is in heartfelt connections between Angelite and all of the people in her professional sphere. Angelite was a woman of many gifts, all of which were borne of her incredible creativity. Fashion was her first love, but she was no spendthrift. She created stunning outfits from eclectic garments discovered on sales racks and thrift stores the world over, including on an epic trip to London. This, in many ways, captures her spirit. Angelite didn’t care about designer labels and she could see the potential in items that others cast away. For her, beauty was a verb and a state of being. Everything she touched was made more splendid, more graceful, more unique. Angelite’s life lasted only fifty-one short years, but they were good years, rich with meaning, wonder, and devotion. She will live on through her amazing children, whom she fortified with all of her love. Her memory is a blessing to all who cherished her. She is survived by her husband, children, mother, brother, and a sweeping kinship of family and friends.
