Virginia "BUTSY" Coney

VIRGINIA BETTY CONEY was born on February 2, 1929 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. At the age of six, Virginia and her family moved to Baytown, Texas, where she attended school. At the age of twelve, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at a local Baptist church in Baytown. 

In 1945, the family moved to San Diego, California. Virginia, who was sixteen at that time, enrolled and graduated from San Diego High School. It was during high school when she met Oscar Wilson. They were later united in marriage. Three children were born to their union.

Virginia later met and married Luther Cardwell Coney. Two children were born to their union and she also gained and embraced a loving stepson. The Coney Family united with the Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Charles Gayton. There, she served as President of the Health Unit, President of the District Nurses, Sunday School Teacher and Secretary of the Mission Department. She wore many hats, and was happy to serve wherever she was needed. 

During the early years, Virginia was employed at Convair. She later joined the Naval Training Center, where she retired in 1991 after twenty-five years of exemplary service.

On March 18, 1985, Virginia’s beloved husband, Luther, was called home to be with the Lord.  In 1999, Virginia moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to be with her eldest daughter, Deborah, where she united with the Second Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Willie Davis. She especially enjoyed attending Sunday School, which was her “Sunday Joy”.

Virginia enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching the Young and the Restless and western movies. She loved her family unconditionally and she knew they loved her too.  Virginia was an incredible, amazing and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, aunt, sister and a dear friend to so many. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.  The following are Virginia’s own words: “I have had a wonderful and fulfilling  life.  My family has always been there for me; so do not weep for me. I won’t be in pain anymore” .  She fought a good fight, stayed on her course and remained faithful to her God.

On Sunday, May 27, 2018, Virginia Betty Coney was called from earthly labor to eternal rest. She leaves to mourn her passing her loving children: Deborah, Oscar (Ruthann), Mary, Valerie, Michael and Marcus (Sharon); Her one and only sister, Rosa “Rosie”; eighteen grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews,  other relatives and many friends who will mourn her passing, yet celebrate her life.
