Vera Dewitt Obituary

VERA ODESSA DeWITT was born December 18, 1935 in Camilla, Texas to Bolivar and Beatrice Lee. She was the youngest of ten children born into this union and was raised in a religious household and accepted Christ at an early age. She attended Mac Whealley Elementary School in Camilla, Texas and graduated from Lincoln High School in Coldspring, Texas in 1952.  Vera was a good student and athlete in school. She loved playing on the girls’ high school basketball team. It was there that she developed her lifelong love for basketball and sports in general.

Vera moved to Oakland California after graduating high school to live with her sister, Helen Parker and work in the medical field. While living in Oakland, she met Elmore G. DeWitt whom she married on March 21, 1957. She and her husband permanently moved to San Diego, where their two children Victor and Darlene were born.

Vera was a homemaker while raising her two children. She worked for the San Diego City School District starting in the 1970’s when her children became older until her retirement as a teacher’s aide after over twenty years of employment.

Vera was a warm and caring person with an easy manner and ready smile. She was always a positive person who gave everyone she met a kind word and blessing.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents and all of her siblings.

On Thursday, July 11, 2019, Vera Odessa DeWitt was called from earthly labor to eternal rest. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Darlene DeWitt of San Diego, California; her son, Victor DeWitt and daughter-in-law, Janice DeWitt of El Cajon, California; one grandson, De’Angelo DeWitt-Redding of San Diego, California and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn passing, yet celebrate her life.
