Richard Buford, Jr. Obituary

MR. RICHARD M. BUFORD II, was born October 9, 1957 in Sacramento, California. He was the second of two sons born to Richard and Melvina Buford. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age.  

During the early 1970s, Richard and his mother relocated to San Diego, California, where his mother met and married Walter Travis. Mr. Travis was very inspirational in raising Richard. Richard graduated from Crawford High School and continued his education at San Diego State University.

Shortly after arriving to San Diego, the family joined Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. S. M. Lockridge. They later moved their membership to St. Stephens Cathedral Church of God in Christ under the spiritual guidance of Bishop George Dallas McKinney.

On January 27, 1977, Richard enlisted into the United States Air Force, where he received numerous medals and commendations, including National Defense Service Medal and the Longevity Award. He received his Honorable Discharge on January 31, 1997 after twenty years of service of excellence.

Shortly after retiring from the Air Force, Richard began employment with Alaris Medical as a Data Entry Specialist. In 2006, Richard went back into retirement to take care of his mother.

In 1977, While at St. Stephens, Richard met the lovely Sandra Jeanette Davenport. They were united in marriage on March 18, 1978. After twenty-six years of marriage, Richard’s beloved wife Sandra was called home to Glory.

In 1997, Richard joined Words of Life Christian Ministries where he rededicated his life to Christ under the leadership of Pastor Cecil L. Brookins. There, he served on God’s program as a Deacon.

Richard dearly loved his family and he knew they loved him too. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, chess and bowling.  He especially enjoyed spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra; both of his parents; his stepfather, and his brother, Anthony Works.

On Wednesday, January 1, 2020, Mr. Richard M. Buford II was called from earthly labor to eternal rest. He leaves to cherish his memory, two children, Latasha Lawson (Kendrick) and Richard M. Buford III; six grandchildren, Jasmine Buford, Kierra Coleman, Joslynn Coleman, Davon Buford, Kyanna Buford, and Demarcus Buford; a host of other loving family and friends.

Viewing prior to funeral service was held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. followed by funeral service at 2:00 P.M. Interment was at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California. on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 11:30 A.M. Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary was in Charge of Arrangements.
