Mildred Gladys Henry was born February 28, 1937 to Earnest and Arlevia Henderson in Navasota, Texas. She was raised and attended school in Navasota. In High school, she enjoyed playing sports and she excelled as a drum majorette. She also loved to dress and took great pride in her appearance. Early on she obtained the nickname “Bit” due to her small frame.

In 1955, she met a handsome sailor, the love of her life, Lewellyn Henry. They were wed May 12, 1956. They lived in Fallon, Nevada for a while and eventually moved to San Diego, California which became their home. In February 1966, their only child was added to their union. Mildred named her Scheherazade. Millie, as many close to her called her, loved to shop with her little girl. They would frequently go on shopping excursions to Montgomery Ward, JC Penny and Mc Mann’s. She always made sure her daughter was well dressed. She also pushed her to utilize her God giving musical talent by enrolling her in music lessons and taking her to church consistently. She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for many years where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She later united with the Grace Baptist Church.

Millie loved plants and flowers. She enjoyed gardening. She had a green thumb. She would grow ANYTHING. You could often find her strolling through the local nurseries looking for things to add to her gardens. She often said she didn’t like to cook but she loved being outside in her yard. She was a full time wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family and did everything she could to take care of them. Her grandsons, Jarrel and Edrik were her world. She was a nurturer and took on the role of a mother figure to many. Millie also loved to shop and she was good at it. During her later years she rarely went out to shop but she became a loyal customer of her favorite shopping channels.

One of her greatest joy was seeing her daughter find the man of her dreams and get married last year. She always desired that Sherri have a “good” man who would be there for her and all of her grandchildren. She knew Joseph was the one and that God has sent him. She lovingly welcomed Joseph as her Son and she always made time to counsel and encourage the newly weds.

In January of this year, Millie became ill. Although her condition was serious, she slowly started showing signs of improvement and we believed she would recover. God had other plans. During her rehabilitation, she became a favorite with her medical team. Everyone referred to her as “Momma”.

On the morning of July 8, God said it was time for His daughter to come home. She heard the call and answered. She had endured enough and needed to rest. Although our hearts are broken, we rejoice in knowing the struggle is over and she is now somewhere around the eternal throne of God.

She leaves to cherish her legacy one daughter, Scheherazade Henry-Hallett (Joseph); two grandsons, Eddie Jarrel Bradford (Tiffany) and Edrik James Bradford; one sister, Emma Jane Allen (Houston, TX); three great grandchildren, Zariyah Renee Bradford, Jahlisa Zion Bradford and Jarrel Zyhir Bradford; Sister friend of fifty years Mrs. Evelyn Jean Jones, Nephew Gregory L. Perkins an a host of God children, family, loved ones and friends.
