In 1996, Lena was a guest at the Tara Inn B&B in San Antonio. I was also a guest there with my young daughter, as a special vacation I had worked hard to save for as a single mother. Lena took a shine to us both and we spent a long time talking over our shared meal. After we parted back to our lives, we exchanged letters, and it is her letter to me that I had saved in my "Happy Folder" of remembrances and notes from students and friends. Her handwriting still sits pretty in purple ink on stationary with an embossed iris. I went looking today to see if, after all these years, I could find her, and instead stumbled across this sad news of her passing. I send my hearfelt condolensces to her family. In addition to all the good work Lena did in the San Francisco area as a wife and mother and community leader, she also did good work as a friendly traveller on a weekend in 1996. I am sorry I missed telling her again after so many years that her company was a big part of the fun my daughter and I had that weekend. Kind regards, Sarah

To my beautiful cousins family. Lena "Kat" will be greatly missed and she definitely placed a permanent marker on the young women who's life she touched and impacted. I will miss her smile and loving heart. My most sincere condolences and prayers for you all during this season. (Ecclesiastes 3: To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven).

May God lift you all in his caring arms and embrace you need it most.

Love,

Tuttie, Dana, Jr., Dondr'e, & Charles

Lena's life has been a blessing in the world to all she touched with kindness, intelligence and prodigious energy for all she valued. I felt enormously privileged to be her friend and learn from her vast range of experience, her ability to share history thru stories I wish I had written down, her vibrant laughter and a great capacity for joy and sorrow. In my Jewish heritage we ask that Lena's memory become a blessing to all who mourn her unique and meaningful life. May all who mourn be comforted.
