Chezzie Christian Obituary

CHEZZIE BEATRICE CHRISTIAN was born November 22, 1929 in England, Arkansas. She was the only child born to wonderful, loving parents, George and Estelle Hightower. She started her life’s journey in the beginning of the depression era; picking cotton at the age of four and washing dishes at the age of seven. After helping her mother daily, who took in laundry, Chezzie always attended school with a strong desire and willing spirit. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a young age.

During the late forties, Chezzie migrated to San Diego, California, where she worked in domestic service. Because of her love of children, she later began employment with the San Diego Unified School District as a Parent Community Coordinator. She retired after numerous years of outstanding service.

In 1954, Chezzie met the love of her life, Eugene Columbus Christian. They were united in Holy Matrimony on March 28, 1956. Although they lost their biological son, they raised several godchildren, nieces and nephews and loved them all as their very own.

Because of her mother, Chezzie was very poise. Her mother would often tell her. “Stand tall to your height Chezzie”.  Although she had admirers during the early years, Eugene was the one that caught her eye. When he became ill, she took care of him better than royalty. He passed away on June 23, 2009.

Chezzie was known for being astute with class, elegant and very charismatic. She enjoyed sewing, arts and craft, traveling, going to museums, reading, Star Trek movies and the love of her family. She had a very caring and giving nature.

Upon her arrival to San Diego, Chezzie, united with Jackson Memorial Church of God in Christ under the spiritual guidance of the late Bishop J. A. Blake Sr. She later moved her membership to the City of Hope International Church, under the spiritual guidance of Bishop Roy Dixon. Chezzie truly loved the Lord and she knew He loved her. During her walk on this earth, she knew clearly, that she would not have made it this far, if it had not been for the Lord.

On Monday, February 26, 2018, Chezzie Beatrice Christian was called from earthly labor to eternal rest. She leaves to cherish her memory: nieces and nephews, Jean Walker Christian, Nannie B. Osawa (Joni), Paula Christopher, James L. Christian, Karen Williams (James), Alan Christian, Patricia Christian and June Christian; godchildren: Lieutenant Colonel Dominique Cummings, Monnie Graham, LeeO Graham and James Christian; cousins, Lecia Fuller and her dear friends, Mrs.Trysdale, Naomi Fifer Roberson and  Aibola Gwana and a host of many friends.
