TOMMIE ALEXANDER

Mrs. Tommie Louise Hancock Alexander began her life on June 6, 1921. She departed this life on September 14, 2015 in San Diego, CA.

She was born to Ardella and John Hancock and reared by her grandparents Deacon George and Elvira McMichael of Jackson, Georgia.

While in Jackson, she attended Macedonia Elementary School and also became a devout member of Zion Baptist Church giving  her life to Christ at the age of 13.

At the age of 14 she moved to Atlanta, where she graduated with honors from David T. Howard Junior High and Atlanta University Laboratory High School. She later attended Carver Vocational School where she studied Business Administration.

In Atlanta she became a member of Wheat Street Baptist Church and later joined Providence Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a dedicated member for over 60 years. She is a chartered member of the Dorcas Club established in 1947, and a member of the Young-at-Heart.
 
Tommie always possessed an immense amount of energy and love for family. She was an exceptional homemaker,  dedicating her life to her husband and to raising her children. She had a gregarious, loving personality and felt strongly that education was the foundation for a better life.

For a brief period,  she worked at Bell Aircraft Corporation during World War II in the production of the B-29 aircraft.  Additionally, she performed volunteer work at the Kennedy Center, the Georgia Avenue Food Bank and  the Camp Truitt Senior Citizens Center as assistant manager. In her later years, she  enjoyed sales as an Avon cosmetics representative.

On February 8, 1942, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Mason Alexander and to this union five children were born: Kenneth, Janice, Laverne, Bernita and Lisa.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ardella Coleman; husband, Mason Alexander; son, Kenneth Alexander; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Major Alexander and Frances Alexander and first cousin, Ruby King.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Janice Alexander, Laverne Alexander, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Harmon (Bernita) and  Lisa Alexander; granddaughters, Sheena Harmon and Dana Harmon; daughter-in-law, Claudette Washington; cousins, Roberta  Wilson,  Charlotte Waiters and Kathy Jackson; niece, Gail Boswell; nephew, Keith Alexander; a host of other relatives and friends. Services and burial will take place in Atlanta, GA under the direction of Carl Williams Funeral Home, arrangements in San Diego were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary.
