“Yea though I walk through the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil; for thou art with me…” Ps. 23:4b

Johanna Craig was born in Brookhaven, MS to Mr. Willie B and Mrs. Alice Craig on November 26, 1952.  She spent her formative years and  attended the local schools in the Community of Friendship. As a young teen, she sang with a local gospel group with her older sisters and cousins.  She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.

In 1975, Johanna united in Holy matrimony to Mr. Tyree Newton, Sr. and two sons were born to this union, Tyree Jr. and Tyrone.  Because of her passion for taking care of those who were ill, she was always helping others and giving back what so many had previously given to her.

Johanna wanted to better herself and in 1984 she and her Children relocated to San Diego, CA and lived with her Great-Aunt “Babe” (Ernestine Thompson). She enrolled in Maric College and earned a Nursing Degree. Johanna worked as an RN at Scripps Mercy Hospital for almost ten years before becoming a Private Duty Nurse. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends in her home.

Those left to cherish her memory include: Her 3 sons: Kevin Craig, Tyree Newton II (Myisha), and Tyrone Newton (Shannon): Her daughter: Nicole Cotton; Her 5 sisters: Hazel Chambers, Barbara Porter (Oscar), Bessie Brown (Robert), Sandra Goodwin (David) and Vickie Jackson; Her 4 brothers: Willie B Craig II (Wanda), Jessie Craig, Calvin Craig and Charles Craig. 6 beautiful grandchildren: Tiana, Kaori, Zoe, Andreaus, Aaliyah and Amaya Alice and a host of cousins,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     nieces, nephews, close friends and other relatives
