Culbert Alonzo Thomas
December 29, 1929 ~ September 17, 2016 (age 86) 86 Years OldCULBERT ALONZO THOMAS, affectionately known as “CAT”, passed away at the age of eighty-seven, on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at his residence in San Diego, California.
Culberte was born on December 29, 1929 in Harlem, New York to William and Geraldine Thomas. Upon graduating high school, Culbert, joined the United States Army at Fort Monmouth in Monmouth County, New Jersey, where he specialized in communication and computing. He served eight active duties and twelve years reserve. During his service, Culbert was awarded the Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Culbert worked for NBC as an electronic engineer. He retired in 1996 after fifteen years of exemplary service.
Culbert married Mary Ruth Bell in June 1957. They were happily married for fifty-seven years. Culbert was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed computer science and reading sci-fi.
Culbert is survived by his wife, Mary of San Diego; his daughters, Sherry Marshall of New York and Julian and Jacqueline Hendrix of San Diego; his son, Gerald Thomas of San Diego; his brother, Alva Thomas and wife, Judy Thomas of New York; four grandchildren, Maurice Marshall and wife, Angela Marshall, Vashti Thomas, Jaylah and Jizelle Hendrix; great grandson, Diallo Nasir Marshall and his extended family, “Boo” of San Diego, Rodney and Margie Key of San Diego.
