Vera Mae Ross was born April 28, 1945 in Tippo, Mississippi to Richard and Vera Taylor. The family later moved to Arkansas, where she spent most of her youth and attended school.

Vera started her adult life at an early age in Arkansas and gave birth to her firstborn, Diane. Shortly afterward, she relocated to Charleston, Mississippi, where she met and married Roosevelt Ross, Sr. Two children were born to this union, Brenda and Roosevelt Jr.

In 1971, Vera and her children moved to San Diego, California, where she found employment at the Sheraton Hotel. There, she rose to the position of Assistant Director of Housekeeping and Dispatch Officer. She made many, long-lasting friendships during her tenure at the Sheraton. Due to medial concerns, Vera retired in April of 2013 after forty years of exemplary service. Vera attended the House of David Church of God In Christ under the leadership of the late Elder John H. Pound and also Elder Sydney A. Buggs, III.

Years later, after her arrival to San Diego Vera met Andrew Jackson and they were later blessed with the birth of their daughter, Bre’ona.

Vera was a very hardworking single mother, who strived hard to provide a good life for her family. She also helped raise her grandchildren, Stacy, Donna and Felicia. She was a caring, loving, strong mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt and friend to many. She enjoyed watching soap operas and spending quality time with family and friends.

In the fall of 2012, Vera began a serious battle with Ovarian Cancer. After surgery and many chemotherapy sessions, her health began to rapidly decline. During her journey in life, Vera touched many lives. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Willie Taylor. On Wednesday, November 6, 2013, God knew Vera was tired and that it was time for her to come home. She was called from her earthly labor to receive eternal rest. She leaves to cherish her memory Her children, Diana Taylor, Brenda House (Louis), Roosevelt Ross, Jr. and Bre’ona Jackson; brothers, Robert Taylor (Brenda) of St. Louis, Missouri, J. T. Taylor of Joliet, Illinois, Richard Taylor, Jr. of West Memphis, Arkansas, David Taylor, Jr. of West Memphis, Arkansas and Jenkins Taylor of Detroit, Michigan; sisters, Jennie Johnson (Earnest) of Proctor, Arkansas, Betty Samara (Sam) and Barbara Miller (Preston) both of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Donna Ross, Stacy Ross, Felicia Jones, Tenisha Ross, Precious McCombs, Jean McCombs, James Taylor and Nancy Taylor; twelve great-grandchildren; special cousin, Franki Avery and her husband James and children, Marvin and Ashley and a host of friends.
